Nellaidhoo Island: A Residential Haven in Haa Dhaalu Atoll

Nellaidhoo, the 8th residential island in Haa Dhaalu Atoll, spans across 32 hectares and is home to a population of 1406 people. The island’s tranquil ambiance and thriving community make it an idyllic place to call home, with approximately 1,100 residents currently residing on the island.

Academic Excellence and Education Opportunities at Nellaidhoo

Nellaidhoo holds an esteemed academic position within the atoll. The island’s school provides education up to grade 12, serving as the sole institution, besides Kulhudufushi, to offer A-Level courses in the region. Currently, 308 students are enrolled at Nellaidhoo School, while Nellaidhoo Pre-School caters to the educational needs of 39 young learners, ensuring a strong foundation for future education.

Historical Landmarks: Preserving the Past of Nellaidhoo

Nellaidhoo is adorned with historical landmarks that offer a glimpse into its rich heritage. One of the oldest structures on the island is the small coral stone mosque known as Masjid-Hussein, estimated to be over 480 years old. While its origins remain uncertain, efforts are being made to preserve the historical significance of this architectural gem. The Rah Vehi Asaru building, established in 1948, served as the first office in the Maldives during President Mohammed Amin’s tenure. Currently in a dilapidated state, the building holds historical importance as the premises for the Nellaidhoo office, court, and Family Health Section.

Fishing Heritage and Thriving Industries

Nellaidhoo was once hailed as the leader in fisheries throughout Haa Dhaalu Atoll. The island’s ancestors’ dedication and hard work resulted in numerous accolades, showcasing Nellaidhoo’s unparalleled position among other islands. While tuna fisheries have diminished, reef fish fisheries continue to thrive. A contemporary fish factory operated by a private individual ensures a steady supply of fish paste (rihaakuru) and vacuum-packed smoked fish, further contributing to the island’s vibrant economy.

Nellaidhoo’s Industrious Community and Varied Livelihoods

Nellaidhoo is renowned for its industrious and dynamic population. Business enterprises and numerous dinghies in the lagoon exemplify the prosperous lives led by the island’s residents. Women gain recognition for their delectable dishes, such as “sanbosa” and “madhu metaa gandu,” famous in Boduthiladhunmathi. Thatching and coir rope making significantly contribute to the women’s income, while the men of Nellaidhoo engage in sea-cucumber fisheries and resort jobs to sustain their livelihoods. The island’s youth actively participate in sea-cucumber fisheries, earning substantial incomes during the season.

Infrastructure and Environmental Conservation in Nellaidhoo

Nellaidhoo boasts modern infrastructure, including a football stadium and a 920-foot port. To combat the island’s steep topography, sea walls have been constructed to prevent erosion. Ongoing efforts are focused on establishing water and sewerage networks, as well as waste disposal systems equipped with modern equipment. The villagers prioritize maintaining Nellaidhoo as a clean and pleasant place to live, ensuring its recognition for safety and the absence of crime. Boganville trees adorn the island, adding to its natural charm.
