Episode 5 – Ha.Ihavandhoo

Even though Ihavandhoo was reportedly late to learn the trade of fisheries in the atoll, it was one of the islands which witnessed a massive improvement in fisheries over a short period of time. Thus, the island was dubbed "Masveri Ihavandhoo" (meaning Ihavandhoo - island of fisheries). As time passed however, fisheries in the island was hit with a major decline, fishing vessels were sold off and the youth saw less and less opportunities within the field.

Nestled within the Northern Thiladhunmathi Atoll, Ihavandhoo stands out as one of the most populous islands among the 14 inhabited islands in Haa Alif Atoll. With a population of 3,623 people, the island spans approximately 69 hectares, with ongoing land reclamation efforts to add an additional 28 hectares initiated in 2021. Its allure extends beyond its size, as Ihavandhoo is blessed with abundant natural resources, including stones, gravel, and sand, and boasts a pristine white sandy beach.
