The unique tradition of haircuts in Bilehfahi caught my attention. Initially, I assumed that every island in the Maldives would now have its own barber shops. However, Shaviyani Atoll Bilehfahi defied my expectations, lacking an employee-run hairdressing service. It dawned on me that my assumption was not entirely accurate. Despite the absence of a conventional barbershop, a fascinating tradition in Bilehfahi offers barber services to those in need.
On the north beach of Bilehfahi, a square crafted by the island’s youth named “Hilla City,” meaning Stone City, unfolds. This space, adorned with benches and fireplaces, hosts a makeshift barber shop known as Hilla City Saloon. In this open-air setup, every Friday morning from ten to twelve, haircutting services are provided. The island’s barbers emerge to offer their services, attracting individuals of all ages, from the elderly to school children, seeking a trim.

Discussing this impromptu barber service, Ali Aslam, the Vice President of Bilehfahi Council, explained that it originated from the necessity to cater to those seeking timely haircuts, given the absence of an official barbershop on the island.

Aslam further mentioned that on special occasions like Eid, arrangements are made for haircut services, with details announced in the island’s Viber groups.

Now, Friday afternoons hold a special significance for the island. Beyond individuals desiring haircuts, a diverse gathering convenes at that time. Following the grooming session, the community heads to the beach, witnessing children joyfully running and playing together. Additionally, on Fridays, people flock to the square, engaging in conversations and spending quality time. This innovative barber service has significantly enhanced the social fabric of the village.
